No current requirement
NoteNo universal documentary-proof-of-citizenship requirement. 2025 ch. 39 art. 8 (eff. Jan 1, 2026) amended the automatic-voter-registration statute (Minn. Stat. 201.161) so the Department of Vehicle Services only transmits a registration when citizenship-affirming documentation was shown; such applications are otherwise 'deficient.' This applies to the AVR/DVS pathway only, not to online, paper, or Election Day registration.

What to Do Now

  1. 1Check if you have one of the accepted documents (passport, birth certificate, naturalization certificate)
  2. 2If your name has changed, get a passport in your current legal name
  3. 3Order your birth certificate now if you don't have one
  4. 4Verify your voter registration is current
  5. 5Keep originals safe - the SAVE Act requires originals, not photocopies
